I know a lot of people tie their DNS back to google or MIT servers for speed but, there are like 30 or so root hint nameservers out there that are the official root servers that are physically dispersed. If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. If Google DNS servers went down it wouldn’t really affect much of anything. Traceroutes to both DNS servers work. If you're having trouble accessing the internet on your computer today, it may be a DNS problem: Google's DNS servers are currently having issues. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services. I can even do nslookups against both of those servers and they resolve all records. Our wireless guest users have been using Google's DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) without any issues for years until this morning.
